Meet Our Executive Director
Denise Smith Chatman, native of Georgetown, SC.; is married to Timothy Chatman, they have 2 daughters and one granddaughter. Mrs. Chatman graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a BA in Sociology and Webster University with a Masters of Arts in Clinical Counseling. She is a certified parenting facilitator. She has provided counseling services in areas of mental, vocational, domestic violence, and career counseling to youth and adults. She taught at Georgetown’s first charter school, and serves as a independent contract case manager and parenting educator and consultant for community youth programs. Chatman has several years of experience working with youth. In 1997, she founded Unity Community Youth Group, Inc. a community organization that addressed the needs of middle and high school youth throughout Georgetown County and is currently the founder and executive director of Optimism Preventive Services Inc. She is a member of Lighthouse of Jesus Christ Independent and Non-Denominational Church, where she serves on following ministries: women’s choir, mass choir, president of special program committee, and director of youth choir. She is a diamond life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she has served as chairperson of the annual teen conference for six consecutive terms, program chairperson for the organization’s Jabberwock pageant, and serves on membership and social actions committees. She is a former board member of Habitat for Humanity where she served on the community relations committee and was a volunteer parent educator for Habitat Residents. Chatman currently volunteers for the Georgetown County Fire/EMS and South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. She volunteers to read at Sampit Elementary School. Mrs. Chatman enjoys cooking, reading, singing, entertaining and meeting people. Mrs. Chatman believes that inside of everyone there’s good; and that’s what she focuses on the GOOD!
